DRACHENBURG CASTLE
Neo-Gothic castle built between 1882 and 1884 with murals depicting life in the Rhine region in medieval times.
Built between 1882 and 1884 for a wealthy banker, Baron Stephan von Sarter, Drachenburg Palace is the youngest of the Rhine castles. In a style of architecture that was all the rage at the time - neo-Gothic - the castle was first and foremost intended to impress its guests. Siegfried, hero of the Nibelungen legend, is depicted on the east facade and in the Nibelung Hall. Beautiful murals depict life in the Rhine region in medieval times. Behind the castle is the Museum of the History of Nature Conservation (Stiftung Naturschutzgeschichte), recounting the development of mankind's ecological awareness!
