CHÂTEAU DE PFALZGRAFENSTEIN
Atypical white and red castle built as a tollbooth to collect customs duties from ships.
At the entrance to Oberwesel, on a rocky island in the middle of the Rhine, is Pfalzgrafenstein Castle. Recognizable by its atypical location and its colors (white and red), the building was never a dwelling, but a customs house! Built under Ludwig III of Bavaria, the building served as a toll house and allowed to collect customs duties from ships. Pfalzgrafenstein Castle is open to visitors and can be reached from Kaub by a regularly running passenger ferry.
