CASTLE OF RHEINFELS
Built in the century, this castle was used to control the passage of trading ships on the Rhine.
Given the extent of the ruins, it is hard to imagine that Rheinfels Castle still covered the adjoining hill! Today, they are the most important remains in the Rhine Valley. Originally built in the 13th century by Count Katzelnbogen, the castle was used in the following century to control the passage of trade ships on the Rhine. The castle soon became rich. In the 15th century, it was transformed into a Renaissance castle. But the French, here as in the whole region, destroyed it completely in 1796-1797. Attention for the visit, claustrophobic, abstain.
