MOULIN À BATEAUX DU RHIN
A small museum reconstructing the last boat mill on the Rhine, one of the many used by farmers to process grain.
On the riverbank opposite Mainz stands this unusual little museum, an authentic reconstruction of the last boat mill on the Rhine. In the 19th century, from Breisach to Nimwegen, some twenty of these floating mills were used by farmers to grind grain and supply the region with flour. The last of these was in operation until 1928, in the commune of Ginsheim. The site is now open to the public, providing visitors with information on the technology and working conditions of the workers over the years. A fascinating experience!
