MAYENCE CATHEDRAL
Cathedral built at the end of the century, housing tombs, a tombstone and a mausoleum dedicated to Heinrich Frauenlob.
Built at the end of the 10th century on Romanesque foundations, Mainz's St. Martin's Cathedral was subsequently modified, most recently in the 17th and 18th centuries. Inside, the building houses the tombs of the archbishop-electors, the tombstone of Fastrade (wife of Charlemagne) and the mausoleum dedicated to the medieval poet Heinrich Frauenlob, the work of sculptor Ludwig Schwanthaler. Architecturally, the Romanesque style of the three-nave basilica coexists with Gothic and Baroque additions.
