GUTEMBERG MUSEUM
Museum tracing the history of printing, with a collection of rare books such as Goethe's Faust and the Bible.
Another marvel! This museum is dedicated not only to this illustrious man, but to all book lovers. The Gutenberg Museum is located in the heart of the city, behind the walls of a beautiful Renaissance building. First of all, it traces the history of printing, of which Luther said all the benefits, and in particular that "all arts and sciences can (now) survive, develop and be transmitted to our descendants". A major revolution in the history of mankind! On the ground floor, you can find out everything about the press technology invented by Gutenberg. The wood press is a replica of the one used the first time. The first floor features a collection of rare books, including a superb 1854 Faust by Goethe and Buffon's Natural History (18th century). The highlight of the collection is of course the famous 42-line Bible, published in the 1450s. Finally, the last two floors are devoted to the history of writing through different civilizations and binding techniques. An absolutely complete museum, of inestimable value.
