MIKWE - JEWISH BATHS
Well-preserved Jewish ritual baths dating from 1128, with a pit 10 meters below ground and a short stairway to reach it.
The Jewish ritual baths (the Mikwe) in Speyer date back to 1128, and are in an excellent state of preservation. The pit is located 10 m underground, and is accessed by a small stone staircase that plunges into the cool, damp depths of the baths. The adjoining synagogue did not survive the great fire of 1689 (the same one that destroyed the cathedral); only a few sections of wall remain. Speyer's Jewish community and its social and religious life are being rebuilt today, with the arrival of Russian-Germans.
