WORMS JEWISH CEMETERY
Historic Jewish cemetery in Worms, with over 2,500 graves, some dating back to the century.
Worms is home to Europe's oldest Jewish cemetery. It was founded around the same time as the city's first synagogue, in the 11th century. Nicknamed "Heiliger Sand", in French "sacred sand", this site contains over 2,500 graves, some dating back to the 11th century. The oldest dates back to 1058. A UNESCO World Heritage Site, the cemetery is steeped in history. The construction of a cemetery outside the town in 1911 meant that it was no longer used. Male visitors must wear headgear!
