ALTES SCHLOSS
The old castle, one of the most important buildings in the country, is the starting point for walks around the city.
Hohenbaden Castle (Altes Schloss) was the residence of the Margrave of Baden in the Middle Ages. The castle was built by the Margraves of Limburg and served to assert their recent rule over the Rhine. The castle is situated above the village of Baden, which was founded under the name Aquae in Roman times. (today Baden-Baden). From the keep of the Old Castle there is a beautiful view of the town of Baden-Baden and the distant Rhine Valley and Vosges Mountains. There is a large Aeolian harp in the ruins of the Knights' Hall in the Old Castle.
