IMPERIA
9 m-high concrete statue of an Italian courtesan holding 2 men in her hands in Constance harbor.
As if to welcome the ships with open arms, Imperia dominates the port of Constance. This 9 m high concrete statue was erected by Peter Lenk in 1993. It represents an Italian courtesan, holding two men in her hands: on the left an emperor, on the right a pope. Although they are not supposed to represent any historical figure, according to the artist, it seems that they are a nod to Pope Martin V and Emperor Sigismund... The statue serves to denounce the hypocrisy of the clergy and nobility, faithful clients of the city's brothels at the time.
