Berlin's restaurants are usually open all day. Kitchens rarely close in the afternoon. As for brunches, they are generally available until early afternoon.

Budget & Tips

Value for money is excellent in Berlin, even if prices have tended in recent years to fall into line with other European capitals. You'll find hearty main courses for less than €18 on average.

What costs extra

It's frowned upon in restaurants to ask for a pitcher of water, and you may even be refused. In Germany, it's customary to buy a bottle of water (often sparkling). You'll also find that water is sometimes more expensive than beer.

As far as tipping is concerned, you can round off your bill, including by paying by credit card. Keep in mind that it's customary to leave a tip of around 10% of the price when rounding up. Not tipping can be interpreted as dissatisfaction with the service.

The local way

April is the start of the asparagus season(Spargelzeit), and you should be seeing asparagus everywhere, in markets and in daily dishes. Brandenburg's sandy soil is ideal for growing this vegetable. The municipality of Beelitz, southwest of Berlin, is particularly renowned for its asparagus cultivation.

Then, in May, you'll see strawberry stands all over the city... in the shape of strawberries!

As for Berlin's famous Currywurst , we're forced to mention here that its paternity is disputed in Germany. Between Hamburg and Berlin, no DNA test will ever be able to determine with certainty the origin of this strange sausage with its curry sauce. A favorite with tourists, it has become a symbol of the city.
