When it comes to swimming in the lakes, you've got two options: either look for a quiet spot beside one of the many lakes, or head for a beach (for which there's a charge, around €5). Here, the sand is fine, swimming is supervised and you'll find everything you need for a bite to eat.

As for spas and saunas, prices vary widely depending on the standard and the amount of time you spend there. There are just as many large complexes as small, local saunas.

What's very local

During the summer months, the lakes of Berlin and Brandenburg are inundated with bathers. They offer an ideal setting, and small beaches have often been created. It used to be possible to skate on the frozen lakes in winter. But for some years now, winters have not been cold enough..

Indoor climbing is very popular in Berlin. It's a sport you can do on your own, but it's all the more interesting in a group as you can give each other advice.

For outdoor sports, nothing beats the setting of Tempelhofer Feld. On the runways of the former Tempelhof airport, you can go cycling, rollerblading or give your kite a run for its money.

Hertha BSC friendlies (the Berlin soccer team who play in the Olympiastadion) rarely sell out. Reservations are welcome, but it's a safe bet that you'll find tickets on the day.

Main events

The Berlin Marathon is undoubtedly the city's most famous sporting event, not least for its numerous world records.

Every year, the final of the German Football Cup (DFB-Pokal) takes place in Berlin's Olympic Stadium. Hordes of fans from Munich, Dortmund, Frankfurt and Leipzig take to the streets and subways on the U2 line leading to the stadium.
