SEHITLIK MOSCHEE - SEHITLIK MOSQUE
An interesting and beautiful mosque in the Kreuzberg district, near an Muslim cemetery.
Probably the most interesting and beautiful mosque in the districts of Kreuzberg and Neukölln, the Sehitlik Moschee can be visited by appointment, through a guided tour of the building. It's well worth a detour if you speak German or even Turkish, as the mosque's staff will be happy to welcome you for a free mint tea, to talk about the Muslim religion and thus expand your knowledge on the subject before showing you around this high place of worship. This place is truly dedicated to discovery and exchange, which makes it, in addition to a religious sanctuary, a cultural centre open to all, which also has social functions within the local community. It is the second largest mosque in the country and is the work of the architect Hilmi Şenalp, who is also at the origin of other Muslim religious buildings throughout the world (Japan, Turkmenistan...). Its construction was carried out between 1999 and 2005. The style is naturally inspired by the Ottoman Empire (16th-17th centuries) with, among other things, minarets, domes and Islamic calligraphy. Behind the main building, you can discover the small Muslim cemetery, built in the 19th century (the oldest in the country) by an Ottoman ambassador at the Prussian court, and which strongly evokes certain residential areas of Istanbul. It is also from here that the name of the mosque comes from, Şehitlik meaning cemetery in Turkish.
