ERNST-THÄLMANN-PARK
A park with a statue of Ernst Thälmann, the man whose name is on streets, schools, institutions and even an island.
A special feature of the Prenzlauer Berg park is the statue of Ernst Thälmann in the purest GDR style. This president of the KPD (German Communist Party), a figure of the resistance to Nazism who died in the Buchenwald camp in August 1944, was the subject of many tributes in East Germany. Many streets, schools and institutions were named after him (the Ernst-Thälmann Pioniere is the youth movement for 6-14 year olds). An island even bears his name in the famous Bay of Pigs in Cuba.
