TERRESTRIAL TOPOGRAPHY
Memorial exposing the workings of the fascist regime, with striking photos and clear texts in German and English.
The "Topography of Terror" is a memorial located on a vacant lot where a princely palace once stood. It is a landmark in the history of the Third Reich because it was here, in the centre of what was once the Nazi government district, that the most feared institutions of the Nazi machine were located: the Geheime Staatspolizei (Gestapo), the Reichsführer-SS and its staff, the Sicherheitsdienst (SS security services) and the Reichssicherheitshauptdienst (Reich Security Directorate). Hitler's chancellery and bunker were not far away. It was here that the great decisions were taken that set Europe on fire and blood: holocaust, concentration camps, Germanisation of the East... The buildings were bombed by the Allies and then razed to the ground to prevent any neo-Nazi gatherings. Today, the place has therefore changed its face: only the stone foundations of the building remain from this period, now lined by a huge chronology from the 1930s (rise of Nazism) to the 1960s (denazification and trials). The exhibition of the memorial highlights the mechanisms of the fascist regime. The texts in German and English are very clear and the photos are striking. At the entrance, a scale model of the district allows a better location of the various Nazi institutions. On the outside you will find a section of the Berlin Wall that runs along Niederkirchnerstraße, a street heavily marked by history.
