HOHENSCHÖNHAUSEN MEMORIAL - STASI PRISON
Museum housed in a former Stasi prison where political opponents of the Communist regime were interned.
If this museum is far away, it is well worth a visit if you want to plunge into the world of the famous film The Lives of Others by Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck. A visit to the secret Stasi prison will take you into the former headquarters of the political police, "the shield and sword of the Party". This prison did not appear on any map of the city. The secret services of the SED (the Communist Party in power in the GDR) used to lock up opponents there. In the 1980s, an estimated 91,000 Stasi employees kept watch over the population, assisted by 189,000 unofficial "collaborators". The prison was in operation for 44 years, from the end of the Second World War to the fall of the Berlin Wall. Political opponents of the communist regime were held here under abominable psychological conditions. During the visit, you will be told how the interrogations took place, what the means of pressure on the prisoners were, and the methods are icy ... The visit is, moreover, sometimes commented on by former prisoners, which makes it even more poignant. At the end of the visit, don't miss the permanent exhibition which offers a chronology of living conditions under the East German regime with a plethora of historical documents and portraits of historical Party cadres. Thematic exhibitions are also offered on an ad hoc basis. A place that cannot leave you indifferent.
