Museum featuring a collection by one of the world's greatest art collectors, as well as works by numerous masters.

Born in Berlin in 1914 and emigrated to the United States in 1936 to flee Nazi Germany, where he pursued a career as an art journalist before working at the San Francisco Museum of Arts, Heinz Berggruen is one of the most talented art dealers and collectors of our time. After opening a gallery in Paris on the Place Dauphine after the war, he devoted himself entirely to his collections, which he continues to enrich over the years. In 1996, he decided to return to Berlin, offering the city the work of his life: his collection, one of the largest in the world, with its impressive selection of modern artists from Picasso to Laurens, including Braque, Klee, Matisse and Giacometti. Under the title "Picasso and his time" (Picasso und seine Zeit) the collection of paintings and sculptures comprises more than 120 works by the Andalusian painter, including a study for the famous Les Demoiselles d'Avignon. But you will also find many pieces by Paul Klee, whose development from 1917 to 1940 is illustrated mainly by small-format works. Around Picasso and Klee, paintings by Matisse and Van Gogh, but also African art, as if to show the influence of the early arts on the Surrealists, complete this exhibition which gives an extremely varied but also deeply significant insight into the evolution of these artists who were very much rooted in their time. A very beautiful museum, both in form and substance. A place to discover for amateurs and enthusiasts.
