NEUE WACHE
Neoclassical building erected in Berlin in 1816-1818 in memory of the victims of fascism and militarism.
Built in 1816-1818 in a neoclassical style, this "New Guard" is Schinkel's first building in Berlin. Under the GDR it was used as a memorial to the victims of fascism and militarism. Reunified Germany took up this idea and made it the "Central Memorial of the Federal Republic of Germany to the Victims of War and Tyranny". Inside this building, which is extremely sober, visitors can gather in front of the Mother and Son of Käthe Kollwitz, a modern pedestal denouncing the horrors of war.
