ALLIIERTENMUSEUM - MUSEUM OF THE ALLIES
Museum founded in memory of the soldiers who ruled the city of Berlin, with equipment and uniforms from the Allied armies.
The allied forces of the United States, England and France determined the fate of post-war West Berlin and made an indelible mark on the history of the city and the country. During the airlift in 1948, for example, they supplied the city with food for a year and determined all agreements concerning the status of the city until reunification.
It was therefore with great regret that West Berliners watched the Allies leave in 1994, and it was well worth a museum, erected in memory of the soldiers who led the city. It has reinvested the old American cinema, located in the American military city, and offers above all documentation on the airlift and the isolation of the city. But there are also all sorts of vehicles (an American Jeep), uniforms and personal effects that tell the story of the meeting between Berliners and the Allies.
The four most impressive "objects" in the museum's collection are in the courtyard: a Royal Air Force T5 Hastings plane that was used to refuel Berlin during the blockade (you can get on board!), a watchtower as well as a section of the Berlin Wall painted by the French artist Noir, a French army wagon that linked Strasbourg to Berlin, and above all the famous Check-Point Charlie checkpoint: this is indeed the original that once stood in the middle of Friedrichtraße!
All museum signs are in three languages: German, English and French.
