Museum housed in an imposing building in Berlin, now home to collections of Greek and Roman art.

Designed by the Prussian architect Karl Friedrich Schinkel (also famous for the theatre on the Gendarmenmarkt) in a style inspired by the buildings of antiquity, this "Old Museum" opened in 1830 and is, as its name suggests, the first of the museums on the island. But it is also one of the oldest public museums in Germany, behind the Fridericianum in Kassel (1779) and the Glyptothek in Munich (1830). Today it houses collections of Greek, Roman and Etruscan art. Although it is not the most visited, its visit is not unpleasant as the museography is so well cared for. The entrance, on the Lustgarten side, has something monumental, with a stone staircase at the foot of a row of 18 Ionic columns.

On two levels, the collection presents stone and bronze sculptures, vases, but also jewellery and objects from everyday life. The ground floor offers a panorama of ancient Greek art from the 10th to the 1st century BC. Upstairs you will find one of the largest collections of Etruscan art outside Italy (urns, clay tablets, etc). The Roman Empire is not to be outdone. For example, you will see busts of Julius Caesar or Cleopatra. Other exceptional pieces include the famous bust of Pericles or the bust of Brutus of the Capitol. The central rotunda under the dome is probably the most beautiful and impressive room in the museum with fascinating statues of the gods and goddesses of Antiquity arranged in a circle between marble columns.
