ALTE NATIONALGALERIE
Pinacotheque located in Berlin evoking the art of the century between realism and impressionism.
The Alte Nationalgalerie offers a beautiful collection of paintings and sculptures, mainly from the 19th century, between realism, classicism, romanticism and impressionism with a special focus on German and French artists.
On the first floor, realism is in the spotlight, with some great German masters such as Waldmüller or Menzel with his famous painting Interior of a room with balcony, but also with internationally renowned artists such as Courbet or Constable. The paintings on the second floor are quite different, with their impressionist and idealistic touches. Don't miss Rodin's sculptures. An entire room is dedicated to the French, from Manet through Monet to Cézanne. Not to be missed either: Böcklin's Island of the Dead, a painting that inspired many 20th century artists, one of the highlights of this museum. Also, a rich collection of paintings by Max Liebermann, a famous Berlin artist. Finally, the third floor is entirely devoted to Romanticism and Symbolism, with a beautiful part given to Caspar David Friedrich and Anselm Feuerbach.
The building, which looks like a Roman temple, designed by Heinrich Strack and August Stüler and inaugurated in 1876, with its marble interiors and sumptuous stucco decorations, is a prime setting for this superb collection. Note also that the museum offers temporary exhibitions that often focus on a particular artist or style.
