MAUERPARK
A famous park where young, old, punks and artists can meet for a drink and watch the graffiti artists.
A park like no other with, certainly with little greenery, but that's really not why we go there. Maybe we go there first for the wall. No, not the Berlin Wall (although at the time it was still there, hence the name Mauer), but the inner wall (the Wall was actually two walls, separated by what has been called the Todesstreifen, the "death strip"), which is now available to graffiti artists and budding artists, one of the few completely free areas of expression in Berlin. It's a favourite meeting point for Berlin's young people, who come here to have a picnic, drink a beer with friends and admire the graffiti artists creating beautiful frescoes. The Mauerpark is also known for its lively Sundays, with Berlin's largest flea market (popular so rather expensive; every Sunday from 9am to 6pm), its variety of food-trucks and concerts (all styles of music) all day long, and, in the summer, the giant, free open-air karaoke from 2pm, which brings together hundreds of spectators in a stone amphitheatre in a joyful, relaxed atmosphere. A multi-faceted park where the history of the city meets the trends and trendy of today. Prenzlauer Berg is a must for strollers, especially on Sundays for its market and its emblematic karaoke. To find out more about the Wall, you are only a ten to fifteen minute walk from Bernauer Straße where the Wall Memorial is located.
