GÄRTEN DER WELT - JARDINS DU MONDE
430,000 park dedicated to different types of gardens from different cultures and eras, such as Chinese, Japanese...
First laid out in 1987 to celebrate the city's 750th anniversary, this East Berlin park has been continuously enriched over the years to become Gärten der Welt (Gardens of the World). Today, 430,000m2 are devoted to different types of gardens, inspired by different cultures and eras. These include a Chinese garden (Garden of the Regenerated Moon), a Japanese garden (Garden of Confluent Waters), a Korean garden (Garden of Seoul), a Balinese garden in a gigantic greenhouse (Garden of Three Harmonies), an English cottage with its vegetable garden, a kitschy Italian Renaissance garden, and much more. Since 2021, the development of the "Jewish Garden" has completed the picture of the three monotheistic religions already begun with the Christian Garden (reminiscent of a cloister) and the Oriental Garden (Garden of the Four Rivers) inspired by Arab-Muslim palaces.
This large park was chosen for the 2017 horticultural exhibition (IGA, Internationale Garten Austellung), which gave it a new lease of life. A cable car was installed to link the subway station to the entrance to the Gärten der Welt via the summit of the Kienberg. Children's play areas were created and the paths were completely redone. A real facelift. The exhibition also made it possible to enrich the park with 9 "cabinets" which, behind high hedges, conceal astonishing contemporary gardens inspired by nine countries around the world.
