EAST SIDE GALLERY
Berlin open-air gallery featuring paintings by dozens of artists on the 1.3 kilometer-long Berlin Wall.
It's perhaps the most famous of Berlin's galleries... because it's in the open air and has the famous Berlin Wall as its backdrop! 1.3 km long, this painted segment of the Wall along Mühlenstraße is a unique souvenir that you won't find anywhere else in the city. It's also the longest segment of the Wall still standing. In 1989, just after the fall of the Wall, dozens of artists came to paint the eastern section of the Wall, which had remained inaccessible until then. A totally spontaneous project, it was all the joy and euphoria of the moment that was expressed on this wall. Their works are so many messages: there's a man spanning the Wall, there are doves lifting the Brandenburg Gate, there's a Trabant piercing the Wall, etc. Not all of them are interesting, but the only one that stands out is the one on the wall. Not all are interesting, but the mere presence of works of art on a wall that divided the city for 28 years is an eloquent symbol. Unfortunately, time has taken its toll and the paintings are fading. Many tourists have also found it necessary to immortalize themselves with graffiti alongside Brezhnev and Honecker, which doesn't make things any better... The city regularly restores the Wall, but the narcissistic impulse of clever people who want to leave their name on this historic monument sometimes seems stronger. What's more, the East-Side-Gallery is located next to a grey, sanitized construction site built around the Mercedes-Benz-designed auditorium. We'll drop in to see the Wall and soon leave this soulless district behind.
