BEN YOUSSEF MOSQUE
Ben Youssef Mosque, built by the Almoravids and rebuilt by the Alhomads, with a wide street in front of its entrance
The Ben Youssef mosque was the central point around which the medina was formed in the 12th century. Today, a wide street still passes in front of the entrance and separates it from the Almoravid koubba and the leather stores. Built by the Almoravids and then rebuilt by the Almohads, it is dedicated to Sidi Youssef ben Ali, this patron saint suffering from leprosy who led an ascetic life among his fellow beggars. There is not much left of the Almohad architecture: a first restoration in the 16th century, then another one at the end of the 19th century, trivialized this place of prayer.
