BAB AGHMAT
Porte d'Aghmat, where the Almohads seized the Berber city in 1477, one of Marrakech's most popular districts
In reference to the village of Aghmat, home of the Berbers who populated Marrakech, it was through this gate that the Almohads seized the city in 1147. The district is one of the most popular and also one of the poorest. Michel Van der Yeught, from Cadi Ayad University, describes this desert market in a vitriolic book: " There are no tourists, no souvenirs, no trinkets. It's not decorated, it's quiet, you're left in peace. It's the anti-Jemaâ el Fna, it's not beautiful, but it should please you."(Le Maroc à nu, L'Harmattan, 1989).
