BAB AYLEN
Historic doorway in Marrakech, featuring an angled design and retaining its original appearance
This gate, named after a Berber people, is characterized by an angled shape that has retained its original appearance. It has no particular architectural features, but it does mark an important historical episode: it was here that the Almohads suffered a bloody defeat in 1129 when they first attempted to take the city. Once through the gate, you can see the small mosque of the qadi Ayad Ben Moussa, one of the city's seven saints. It's also the entrance to a district with many riads.
