MOUASSINE FOUNTAIN
Marrakech's large public fountain, with 3 main basins, including one for men, one reservoir and one for animals
The largest of Marrakech's public fountains was built by Saadien Moulay Abdallah El Ghalib, around 1570. From the street, three beautifully carved arcades give a glimpse of the three main pools - one for men, one for water and one for animals. Two Atlas cedar lintels stand on consoles decorated with stucco and plaster motifs. The awning, whose faded splendour can be guessed, made of curly and carved cedar, is topped with green tiles. It is regrettable that the fountain is closed to the public and is sometimes used as a parking lot for mopeds.
