WOMEN'S MUSEUM
Women's museum in Marrakech, on 3 levels, presenting the works of 3 different artists every 6 months
"Women don't need men - they can do anything! Nizar Gartit is a staunch supporter of the female cause. He has just opened a museum in tribute to this half of humanity, historically relegated to the wings. More specifically, he is turning the spotlight on Moroccan women, and rural women in particular. On three levels, we discover the extent to which the "second sex" has, since time immemorial, managed tasks essential to the smooth running of daily life. In villages, women were responsible for food security. They were exclusively responsible for market gardening and raising livestock (in addition to their offspring). Carpet weaving was also reserved for them: in these pictures of threads, which accompany individuals at every stage of life, we find great symbolism linked to procreation and fertility. Every six months, the museum presents the works of three different artists, to demonstrate the leading role they also play in the arts and culture. An exhibition will be devoted to the pioneering women of Morocco, and there will be a photographic retrospective to encourage new generations of artists. While the collection undoubtedly needs to be fleshed out a little, it's a good sign that such a space is opening its doors in Marrakech. It's an ambitious and determined initiative. We support it wholeheartedly!
