THE AGDAL GARDEN
Garden to visit, with 2 large ponds in Marrakech, home to an olive orchard and several varieties of fruit trees
A 400-hectare orchard planted with olive and fruit trees: such is the garden created in the 12th century thanks to the rhettaras used to collect water from the water table. Under the Alaouite dynasty, Moulay Abdehrrahmane gave it a decent face, while Hassan I surrounded it with a fortified enclosure. In addition to the fig and almond trees, which are a delight to stroll among, there are two large lakes to the south of the garden. For the record, it was here that the Almohad troops learned to swim before crossing the Strait of Gibraltar!
