Agencies in El Calafate offering 2 outings to discover the Upsala and Spegazzini glaciers by following a path through a lenga forest
The Perito Moreno glacier is undoubtedly the one that offers the most unforgettable view, but far from the tourist trails, other glaciers are worthy of an equally legitimate discovery. If your thirst for excess is not satisfied, a day's sailing is possible to discover them. Two outings are offered in the morning by all the agencies in El Calafate, "Rios de Hielo" passing through the Upsala and Spegazzini glaciers, and "Todo glaciares" which also passes through Perito Moreno. Note that the Upsala glacier is three times larger than the Perito Moreno: it is 800 km²! The walk takes you through snow-covered mountain walls, while drifting icebergs dot the waters. Unfortunately, it is too dangerous to approach it, as blocks of ice regularly break off. Travellers who have chosen to visit this glacier sometimes consider it to be one of the most beautiful in Patagonia. The return trip can be made via Onelli Bay. Usually, one sets foot on the ground to follow a path through a forest of lengas (deciduous trees typical of Patagonia). At the end... a fantastic view of the three glaciers that converge on the lagoon: the Onelli, Bolado and Agassiz glaciers. On the way back, you will walk along the front of the Spegazzini Glacier, one of the highest in the park.
However, 7 hours on a boat is very long, even if with such beautiful landscapes, boredom is rarely the case.
