SAN MARTIN CHURCH
Church in Langrune-sur-Mer, with nave, confessional, tomb of Saint Hélidor, and bell tower spire.
Despite the vicissitudes of time and history, Saint-Martin Church (12th-13th centuries), a listed historic monument, remains an astonishing edifice. Its proportions are a reminder that Langrune was once an important fishing port. Then there’s the purity of its lines, testifying to the transition from Romanesque to Gothic art. And finally, the interior, with its impressively large 13th-century nave and a number of remarkable features, including a Louis XV confessional and the tomb of Saint Helidor, a 9th-century Roman martyr. For the record, the steeple’s spire was struck by lightning in 1683 and rebuilt identically in 1904.
