Built in 1837, during the town's rich coffee-growing heyday, the town's main church, Igreja Nossa Senhora de Nazareth, perched on a rock overlooking the sea, is well worth a visit. The small cemetery at the back of the building offers a beautiful view. Afro-Brazilian demonstrations are said to take place here at night... Every September 8, the church is the object of a great celebration, accompanied by popular jubilation.
