CATEDRAL DA SÉ
São Paulo's most massive and important cathedral, in neo-Gothic style, with dome and crypt, accommodating 8,000 worshippers
This cathedral is the most massive and important in São Paulo and can accommodate up to 8,000 worshippers. It was restored in 2000. It is one of the four most imposing neo-gothic buildings in the world. Its construction required 800 tons of marble! Its construction, which began in 1913, lasted 40 years, as the two world wars largely contributed to delaying its inauguration. The building was finally inaugurated for the celebration of the 400th anniversary of the city.
One is surprised not to find a beautiful baroque cathedral on this site, as one finds everywhere in the country, but in reality the original Igreja Matriz, which existed on this site since its construction in 1589, was destroyed and rebuilt a first time in 1764 into a beautiful baroque cathedral, which was itself destroyed in 1911... The last one is therefore neo-Gothic, even if its impressive dome is in Renaissance style. The mosaics, the sculptures and the furniture were imported from Italy, in particular the imposing organ which comes from Milan, the largest in South America with 12 000 pipes.
In its crypt is the tomb of the indigenous cacique Tiririça, from the Guaianás tribe, who from 1530 helped the Portuguese to colonize the city of São Paulo and to indoctrinate the Indians with the help of the Jesuit Fathers Manuel da Nóbrega and José de Anchieta. There is also the tomb of the regent Diogo Antônio Feijó (18th century), a progressive religious and political figure who was a major figure in Brazilian history.
