VIADUTO DO CHA
An ancient 204 m long viaduct over the Anhangabau valley, symbolizing an improbable junction between two worlds
The Viaduto de Cha (Tea Viaduct), inaugurated in 1892, is the oldest in the city. It is made of metal and was imported from Germany. It passes over the Val de Anhangabau ("valley of the devil" in Guarani), formerly covered with tea plantations (chà). The 204-metre long viaduct leads to the pedestrian streets of the City of Paulista and symbolises an unlikely junction between two worlds that are at odds with each other: the brokers and bankers of Latin America's leading financial centre, and the street vendors and outcasts of all kinds who populate the area.
