PINACOTECA DE SÂO PAULO
Pinacotheque featuring a collection of modernist paintings, sculptures and temporary exhibitions...
The Sao Paulo "Pinacoteca" was installed in a superb building created by the architect Ramos de Azevedo in 1895 (also the author of the Municipal Theatre and the Central Market), whose first vocation was to house the Liceu de Artes e Ofícios, the equivalent of the Arts et Métiers in Paris, which trained the city's technicians and craftsmen. In 1911, the first Brazilian exhibition of fine arts was held here. The Pinacoteca was one of the very first museums in the city and today has nearly 100,000 works in its permanent collection. Only a part of the collection is exhibited in the ten rooms of the Pinacoteca, which was remarkably renovated by Paulo Mendes da Rocha in 1998, making it a dynamic institution on the international art scene. Among the many sculptures and engravings by Brazilian artists on display are landscapes, portraits and still lifes by the 19th century painter Almeida Junior, and landscapes immortalized by Antônio Parreiras and Benedito Calixto. The museum's undeniable asset is its collection of 20th century modernist paintings, notably by Victor Brecheret, Lasar Segall, Flávio de Carvalho or the very feminine Tarsila do Amaral and Anita Malfatti. There are also sculptures by the Frenchmen Rodin and Maillol, and works by the contemporary Brazilian artists Paulo Monteiro and Nuno Ramos. There are also temporary exhibitions. A must for all art lovers.
