MOSTEIRO DA LUZ AND MUSEU DE ARTE SACRA
Monastery housing a Museum of Sacred Arts with religious artworks and a collection of Baroque relics
This complex is undoubtedly part of the city's religious tourism circuit. The "Monastery of the Light" was founded in 1579, initially with a small church in honour of Nossa Senhora da Luz. In 1600, the church was moved and the monastery erected in the same place to house the Conceptionistas Sisters, who were responsible for making the famous miraculous pills of Frei Galvão, a "holy remedy" that was distributed twice a day in the church. It is one of the most important buildings still standing in the history of São Paulo.
The Museum. It houses the Museum of Sacred Arts, which has 800 pieces of religious art from all the churches in the region. The collection includes relics of the Baroque art that flourished in the 16th century in the region, including gold and silverware, paintings, sculptures, furniture, altars, sacred vestments and rare liturgical books. There is an astonishing collection of incense burners(laparaios) and Russian icons, works by the main Baroque masters of the time, including Antonio Francisco Lisboa, o "Aleijadinho" (1730-1814), who decorated the Baroque churches of Minas Gerais, Frei Agostinho da Piedade (1580-1661), Frei Agostinho de Jesus (1600 or 1610-1661), Manuel da Costa Athayde (1762-1830), but also a collection of coins from the colonial period and pontifical medals. Especially for lovers of sacred art.
