BIXIGA SQUADRON
Beautiful Bixina staircase, with 84 steps and a height of 16 m, linking the upper part of the district to the lower part
The beautiful Bixiga staircase, with its 84 steps and 16 metres high, connects the upper part of the neighbourhood (Rua dos Ingleses) to the lower part (Rua Treze de Maio), where many of the cantinas and the antiques market are located. Symbolically, this staircase, which has a certain air of "Montmartre Hill", was to unite the most popular social classes of the lower part of the city, often of Italian origin, with the most privileged social classes, who lived in the upper part of the city, after the city built wealthy housing estates there on a former English golf course.
