AVENIDA PAULISTA
An avenue that is both a financial center and a tourist attraction, lined with skyscrapers, modern buildings and museums
Both a financial center and a tourist axis, Avenida Paulista is a must for both residents and visitors. It is very well served by the metro. It was inaugurated in 1891, at the end of the 19th century, when the city was looking to expand into more residential, green and airy spaces than the confined areas of the centre. The land occupied by former fazendas had the advantage of being planted with beautiful trees, which later gave rise to the neighbouring Jardines district, which has not lost all of its beautiful nature. The very pleasant Trianon Park can still be found on the avenue. Avenida Paulista is lined with skyscrapers and modern buildings, mostly occupied by banks, some by luxury hotels or administrations, and by no less than nineteen consulates, including the French one. There are still some examples of colonial architecture such as the Casa das rosas, now a cultural centre. It is lined with museums such as the great MASP, but also the Itau center where temporary exhibitions of quality are held.
The most popular event takes place every Sunday, when the avenue is closed to cars for the pleasure of pedestrians. It is then transformed into a bicycle path, a street market, a children's playground, a concert stage, an antique market and a pleasant Sunday strolling area. This is also where Paulistanos meet to celebrate New Year's Eve every year, but also to demonstrate.
