CASA DO GRITO
House bought by the city of São Paulo in 1936, now a cultural center
The historic "Casa do Grito" or House of the Scream in French, was built in this part of the city which was the scene of the proclamation of independence of Brazil in 1822 by Dom Pedro I. Its name refers to the 1888 painting Independência ou Morte (Independence or Death) by Pedro Américo, in which a house similar to this one is depicted. Nevertheless, the oldest document referring to the construction of this house dates from 1844. It was bought by the city in 1936 and now houses a cultural centre.
