WOLJEONGSA TEMPLE
Temple built in 645 by the monk Jajang during the reign of Queen Seondeok, with a 9-storey octagonal stupa and a statue of Manjusri.
It was founded in 645 by the monk Jajang during the reign of Queen Seondeok. In the courtyard is a 9-storey octagonal stupa from Goryeo, certainly one of the most beautiful in Korea in this style. In front of it is a statue of Manjusri (bodhisattva of wisdom) making the gesture of offering a lotus flower. It is said that King Sejo who came to pray in this temple was disturbed by a cat pulling his tunic. He then searched the temple and found a man who was trying to murder him. He then erected a monument to the cat and prohibited the killing of these animals.
