DONGMYEON OR HWAAMNI VILLAGE
A friendly village about 1 km from the cave, home to old houses and dabang teahouses.
If you cross the bridge at the exit of the village, you arrive at the entrance of the spring park. At the entrance to the small valley stands a rock called Maetdol baui, the rock of the millstone. A legend is associated with it: it would have turned on itself when a dragon horse appeared accompanied by an earthquake. A spring always flows from the rock. Opposite on the right, a flock of steps leads to Geobuk baui rock, the turtle rock, so called because it strangely resembles the head of this animal, the tutelary deity of the region. The gorge continues along a stream, offering a beautiful landscape in autumn. First we meet the more recently developed Ssangyaksu source. The original source is 1.5 km from the entrance. Mun Myeong-mu from Guseuldong village had a dream in 1913 where 2 dragons flew at the foot of Dongja Rock. He went there, dug and discovered this spring. The water flowing under the flag is ferruginous, hence its reddish colour and very strong taste. It only produces 1.66 litres per day, and is renowned for its ability to fight gastritis, anemia and ophthalmia.
From Jeongseon, Route 42 continues to Pyeongchang, then turn right towards Yeongwol on Route 31. This road is also very beautiful, very green, and you can still see houses with pine shingle roofs and stone roofing (nowajip), a special architecture of the region designed to withstand snow in winter.
