EAST COAST BEACHES (SAMCHEOK - POHANG)
Quiet, inexpensive, little-visited beaches on the east coast, with small, pleasant mobile-home camping sites.
From Samcheok to Pohang, the coastline, almost straight on the map, actually has dozens of small rocky coves. Unlike the west coast, which is more indented but less mountainous, the east coast sees its mountains come to die in the sea. The many streams that flow into the sea have created small beaches at regular intervals. Sand, mountains, pine forests, sea, everything seems to come together to form an enchanting picture. Unfortunately, this is not always the case. The coast is sometimes disfigured by unfortunate constructions, barbed wire, the national road, and the villages rarely have the charm of small authentic ports. Of the more than 20 official beaches, only a quarter are really worth a visit. But the positive side, because there are always some, is that these small, barely developed seaside resorts are quiet, inexpensive and little visited... for the moment. And there are also many small sites, very pleasant, for camping in mobile homes in particular. It is therefore an excellent alternative to the crowded and ultra-touristic northern beaches.
We mention bus stations and main destinations on the way. We start with Donghae, whose beaches as well as those in the North have already been covered in the Gangwondo sections, but the nearby town of Samcheok is a better starting point. See Donghae and Pohang for transportation to these cities.
