NOSEO MOUND PARKS
Two parks containing several Silla royal tombs, huge grass-covered mounds with the occasional altar.
These two parks located on either side of a street are dotted with several royal tombs of Silla. They are huge mounds covered with lawns, sometimes with a recent altar at their feet. There are more than 670 graves in the Gyeongju region dating from Silla. Among them are the tombs of the 58 kings and queens of this kingdom, but only two of them could be identified with certainty: those of the kings Munmu and Heungdeok.
Some of these burial mounds were excavated from the 1920s onwards by the Japanese, following a fortuitous discovery of a magnificent gold crown during the construction of a house. This district was covered with dwellings until 1984 and the inhabitants did not know that they slept on ancient treasures. Excavations did not resume until 1974, but most of the burial mounds have not yet revealed their treasures. They are the tombs of kings, but also of princes, members of the royal family, nobles and high officials. The tombs of these 2 parks would date from the 4th and 5th centuries. All of them revealed treasures, including gold and jade crowns and belts on display at the National Museum. Gyeongju's tallest tomb, Bonghwadae, is 25 m high and trees grow elegantly on its sides. This park is pleasant to visit, and offers a strange panorama in the middle of the city, especially when night falls. Even if before the children played there on snowy days, we no longer climb the mounds.
