DAEREUNGWON BURIAL MOUND PARK
Park containing royal and princely tombs, including that of King Muchi, the first king of the Kim clan, Hwangnamdaebun, Cheonmachong.
This large park contains 20 royal or princely tombs. There is the presumed tomb of King Muchi, the first king of the Kim clan, who repelled the armies of Baekje. His successor was helped in a surprise attack by the rival kingdom Yiseo by strange unknown soldiers who disappeared after the victory. All that remained of their passage were the bamboo leaves that came out of their ears in front of Muchi's tomb. It is said that it was the spirit of this king who sent them and his tomb took the name of "bamboo tomb". It is surrounded by a wall and is only accessible during ceremonies. Another remarkable tomb is the Hwangnamdaebun tomb which is 23 m high and 250 m in circumference, making it the largest of the Silla tombs. It is one of the 10 double tombs in the shape of a gourd where royal couples or a father and his son would be buried. This tomb was excavated and is thought to date from the late 6th century.
The Cheonmachong tomb dates from the same period. It is the most famous tomb in the group and even in Gyeongju. It is only 13 meters high, but it has revealed interesting objects, such as a birch panel with a flying horse painted on it (hence the name of the tomb: "the tomb of the heavenly horse"). This motif, similar to some of the motifs painted in the Goguryeo tombs to the north, is well preserved. The tomb has been arranged so that one can visit the interior. A cross-section shows the construction method.
