Korea's most famous and largest fish market, opened in the century, to be visited early in the morning during the fish auction.
This is Korea's most famous and largest fish market, a truly unique place. Opened in the 19th century, no less than 50% of all Korean seafood comes from here and is sold here. In this iodized labyrinth, dozens of stalls line the quayside, selling every imaginable fish, from the smallest to the largest: huge octopus, squid, eels wriggling in bags, crustaceans - it's all here for hundreds of meters, outside, inside, everywhere. It's not uncommon to see an octopus swim several centimetres in the hope of regaining its freedom. It's a world away from any other market, and we love it! The best time to visit is of course early in the morning, when the fish are auctioned, but the activity continues all day long. Near Nampodong, you'll find vendors selling seaweed, dried fish, herbs and seeds. This is where tourists go to make a purchase, as it's harder to get fresh fish back to the hotel (we can imagine why!). If you can't get enough of these fresh victuals, there are three solutions: you can stop off at one of the many restaurants or buy your fish and then go underground, where ajuma will prepare and serve it to you. Right at the entrance to the market, you can also go to one of the pojangmacha (tented restaurants), all of which offer unique fish and seafood dishes.
