MUDEUNGSAN NATIONAL PARK
Mountainous park ideal for walks and hikes, natural pillars, Jeungsimsa temple and its beautiful structures.
Overlooking the city, this mountainous park is ideal for walks and hikes. It allows you to appreciate the wild beauty of the region. Each season, the mountain takes on a new dress and is adorned with different assets. The slopes are gentle, making the hike accessible to all. Among the various points of interest that the Mudeungsan Park offers, one can contemplate natural hexagonal pillars whose shape is very atypical, the Jusangjeolli cliffs. You can also go to the Jeungsimsa temple at the west foot. Originally built in 517, it has unfortunately undergone much destruction and reconstruction, but it nevertheless has some beautiful structures and interesting cultural properties, in particular a metal Buddha from Silla.
For those with a sweet tooth, watermelons from Mount Mudeung are famous for their flavour and fragrance. Higher up, at the foot of the mountain, there is an amusement park, the Jisan Resort, which is a great place to take a break after a long minute's walk. Further up, near Lake Gwangju, on Route 887 to Hwasun Hot Springs, is a valley with several pavilions linked to the 16th century literary community (gadan) of Seongsan who had settled there. The poet Jeong Cheol came to this beautiful valley to find the source of his inspiration. Taken by storm at the weekend, you will surely share your hikes with the inhabitants of Gwangju in search of nature.
