JEONJU HANOK VILLAGE
Village in the industrialized city of Jeonju with a unique collection of over 800 traditional houses still inhabited.
This village has become a must-see in Jeonju City! Located in the heart of the industrialized city, it has a unique ensemble of more than 800 traditional houses still inhabited, a rare example in the resolutely urban landscape of modern Korea. If you take the first street on the right just after the cathedral, you will see on the left a pedestrian alley where a traditional house has been transformed into a tea room and traditional bistro. Further on the left, in the first street, is the incredible traditional Samwon Hanyakbang pharmacy in a delightful old house with an interior garden. Take a look around a couple of times.
Still in the neighborhood, behind an old door you will find a very nice house dating from the end of Joseon, the Hak-indang. It took 4,280 carpenters and workmen to build this house in two and a half years. It is still inhabited, so we will be discreet if we wish to visit it. On the left, one goes down towards the hyanggyo and the museum of Calligraphy along the banks in a charming street lined with old houses, tangled alleys where one must get lost, houses of shamans. The houses cling to small hills. The whole site is surrounded by small hills dotted with temples, pavilions, etc., excellent pretexts for beautiful walks, all the more so as many houses have been converted into cafés, restaurants, art galleries or tea houses, where you can take a deserved break! Not to be missed!
