AÉROPORT INTERNATIONAL DE BUJUMBURA
11 km north of the city centre, Bujumbura airport (BJM international code), opened in 1959, was one of the first in the Great Lakes region. Modernized in the 1980 s, the passenger terminal presents an original architecture, which still gives rise to admiring or critical comments: white domes crossed with brown windows, such as returned egg shells, represent the typical form of the Burundian houses, with conical thatched roofs.
From the plane, we walk on the tarmac to reach the terminal where the formalities are taken (control of yellow fever vaccination, verification or issuance of visas, customs). These checks and delivery of baggage are rather fast (30 minutes in total). They are also at the beginning (registration up to 1 hour before takeoff).
