THE INDUSTRIAL PORT
The port of Bujumbura is, with those in Kigoma (Tanzania) and Mpulungu (Zambia), the largest in Lake Tanganyika. Built in 1914 by the Germans and then installed on its current site by the Belgians, starting in 1925, it was modernised in 1959 for traffic over the whole Belgian lake area (Burundi, Rwanda, Congo). Its capacity is therefore considerable, even if its facilities are somewhat outdated. Now mostly turned south to Tanzania and Zambia, the port is difficult to access, unless there is a boat or to go to the RÉGLER (Office of Revenue Office of Burundi). However, the infrastructure can be distinguished from the nearby urban beach.
